OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — AT&T is throwing its hat into the ring as a new rival to Google Fiber’s high-speed internet service, which has been available in the metro for a couple of years. It’s a race to be faster than the competition.
“They can do it bigger and better.”
Those are the words of AT&T’S president for Kansas, Mike Scott, upon announcing his company’s new one gigabit internet service which will rival that of google.
Scott unveiled AT&T’s new Gigapower Internet Service Monday in Overland Park. It promises speeds similar to that of Google Fiber taking downloads up to one gigabite per second.
Scott explains users can download more than 20 songs per second, or a full-length movie in under a minute. He also claims his company will be ahead of the competition since it’s been in the service provision game for over a century.
“We think we do it bigger and we do it better. We’re a company that’s been in business for over 100 years. We know networks. We already have the existing networks in the ground. We just had to expand it and enlarge it a little bit and make it useful for one gigabit speed,” said Scott.
Scott says gigapower service is now available in several locales in the metro, such as KCMO, Overland Park and Olathe.
There are plans to expand into Independence and Shawnee in the coming months.
FOX 4 reached out to Google Fiber for a reaction to AT&T’s plans, but a company spokesperson told us there would be no comment.
