AVONDALE, Mo. — Residents in Avondale complain they haven’t slept well nearly a week.
Bright lights and noise from a construction site has been keeping people awake during the overnight hours.
The Clay County neighborhood in question in Avondale overlooks Cerner’s world headquarters. The healthcare technology giant has been clearing land and building a new parking lot for its employees to use. However, in at least three situations, construction has gone all night long, leaving neighbors to complain to authorities they can’t find a wink of sleep.
Heavy equipment is making a heavy sound, as late-night construction has kept people awake. Three neighbors complained to FOX 4 News about the trucks and bulldozers banging around at all hours.
“They run all night without any consideration for the people who live here who are trying to sleep,” neighbor Jeanne Antes said.
Antes’ home is about a half-block away from the construction site, but she says she can hear the racket loud and clear.
Antes says she’d called city officials and the Cerner corporation for two days to complain, but nothing happened — at least not at first.
“Cerner is concerned about being good neighbors,” David Harris, Code Compliance Manager for the city of North Kansas City said. “They have agreed to work during the day only.”
Harris said Avondale residents have called his office to complain. Since Cerner has been cooperative, his office considers the matter as finished.
Fox 4 News received this statement from Cerner public relations, saying the company hasn’t violated any city ordinances. It says, “We apologize for the inconvenience to our neighbors. Moving forward, construction will occur only between the hours of 7:00 am and 8:00 pm.”
Cerner’s public relations department tells FOX 4 News this construction project is due to be completed in September.
