OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — The Royals’ run in the World Series has fans lining up for a signature haircut from the team’s barber.
DeJuan Bonds of Purple Label Barbershop in Overland Park is responsible for the popular haircut known as “The Hos” and other unique styles.
“I love what I do,” Bonds said on the afternoon of game 3. “I love my clients, and I love my city.”
Every snip, every clip and every buzz Bonds executes is detailed to perfection.
“Very precise,” he said. “So this has to be down to the science and crispy, we always say in the barber game.”
His precise cuts caught the attention of Royals players like Eric Hosmer, Alex Gordon and Jarrod Dyson.
“Baseball players are superstitious,” Bonds said. “If they found that if they’ve gotten a haircut before the game, that they’ve hit a home run or had a really great game, then they’ll probably try to use that as leverage for the next game.”
It’s good luck that comes in the form of unique styles like the modified Mohawk known as “The Hos”.
“I put a little extra attention on him because he gets most of the TV time,” Bonds explained of Hosmer.
Another fan favorite is Dyson’s lightning bolt hairdo called the “Zoombaya”.
“I said what do you want?” Bonds recalled of his conversation with Dyson after the team clinched the ALCS. “He said, ‘I want the Zoom! Zoom!’ Oh let’s do it.”
Getting shout-outs from players on Instagram and Twitter hasn’t hurt Bonds’ business either.
“It’s just been a crazy lately,” Bonds said. “I mean this whole week, last week, since the postseason, we’ve been getting a lot of requests to do anything related to the form of the way I do the Royals players’ hair.”
Now that the World Series is here, fans are lining up to get the royal treatment, and Bonds is supporting the team one haircut at a time.
“I think the superstition and me being a part of it is pretty cool,” Bonds said. “To be this close and to be able to enjoy this with these guys, I’m very happy for them.”
