KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Residents of a multifamily housing complex are reacting to a Friday night police standoff, which took place where they live.
Police responded to a report of a disturbance shortly after 6 p.m. Friday, and said when they got to the Brougham Estate residential complex located in the 1700 block of N. 73rd Terrace, a man fired at them. Police fired back.
Investigators said 24-year-old Charles D. Broadway of Kansas City, Kansas died in the standoff, but haven’t released details about his death. KCK police say the incident remains under investigation.
Cindy Sandate and her friend watched Friday night’s standoff with an up close and personal view.
“He was right up there all along. We had our face planted in the windows. We didn’t realize until the SWAT team came back here that they were flashing the flash light up there, spotlight up there,” she said.
Neighbors told FOX 4 police were focused on a man in unit three, a townhome inside the complex.
“It sounded like firecrackers, and I saw two guys hunched down over there under the carport, I thought they were kids, and I told her, I said look at those kids over there and she looked that way and seen all the policemen over there on the corner of the house,” said Sandate.
She described officers crouched down under carports and surrounding buildings, SWAT vehicles in the grass, and Saturday morning, a boarded up back door.
Eric Smith moved into the complex six years ago and lives there with his grandchildren.
“One of the reasons I moved out here is because I have them and so it’s real safe out here. We don’t have that type of activity. I came out and looked and I couldn’t believe that they were scrambling around out there, automatic weapons and so forth,” he said.
The people who spoke with FOX 4 said they did not know Broadway, and said the complex is generally quiet with little police activity.
