KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Better Business Bureau says “sweat the small stuff.” The BBB has sent out a scam alert warning people to check their credit and debit card statements for a charge of $9.84.
Aaron Reese from the Kansas City Area Better Business Bureau says his office has yet to receive any complaints of a scam hitting card users across the country, but he warns everyone to look out for bogus charges on their statements.
“If unauthorized charges start showing up on your credit card statement, that means that your card is already compromised,” Reese warned.
The amount charged may be hard to spot at first because it’s relatively insignificant: $9.84.
“Exactly because it seems silly. It seems like something that someone could forget that they bought,” Reese explained.
The Better Business Bureau warns the charge will look like it’s coming from a website, but if you go to that site it will say it’s a “Customer Support” site.
But the BBB says don’t fall for it. If you look up that “Customer Support” site on Google, you’ll see several warning signs.
Instead go directly to your card issuer and request a new card.
While the Target information breach has received a lot of attention, Reese says this may not be related, instead, you could have accidentally supplied the information
“A lot of the times it’s going to come from you giving too much information,” Reese said.
His advice is for consumers not to give vital information out to anyone who contacts you.
Reese says the people who steal this information may continue stealing money from you a little at a time unless you change your account number. The BBB also warns scammers may change the amount stolen as word gets out about $9.84.
