KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Tuesday Americans will be able to get online and start shopping for health insurance through the new marketplace. But, buyers beware. The Better Business Bureau says scammers are using the October 1 launch to prey on unsuspecting consumers.
The BBB said scammers are contacting consumers claiming to be with the federal government in an effort to get you to give up your personal information. Crooks then use that information to gain access to your bank accounts.
The BBB said avoiding being a victim is simple: never respond to someone soliciting you. It said the federal government will rarely, if ever, call you. It said if someone claiming to be a government official calls, emails, or texts you — do not respond.
Who can you trust?
Navigators, counselors and insurance agents are trained and some are licensed to help you find the right insurance plan for you and your family. Over the next few months they will be available at health clinics, hospitals, community centers and other places.
Healthcare.gov, the new health insurance marketplace, officially opens Tuesday.
