KANSAS CITY, Mo. — BBQ and tournament hoops, two Kansas City traditions. For the first time the two are coming together officially! Just outside the Power and Light District BBQ teams are setting up.
One team for each school was invited to represent them in the first ever “BBQ-U.” Ten teams will compete in four categories.
Cox Brothers from Manhattan has been serving up the barbecue for 35 years and got the call to do it for school pride. Bud Cox says it will be their first contest ever.
Basketball fans are almost as excited to dig in to a true taste of Kansas City as they are to cheer for their favorite teams. The four categories are ribs, burnt ends, pork shoulder, and brisket. The pits started firing at 6 p.m. on Thursday night. Judging happens Friday at 3 p.m. and winners will be presented with their trophy at halftime of second semi-final game.
