In Fort Smith, Ark., where a large percentage of citizens identify themselves as Christian or Protestant, the American Atheists group put up a billboard with a controversial and unpopular message, just in time for the Christmas season.
“Dear Santa, All I want for Christmas is to skip church! I’m too old for fairy tales,” the billboard says.
The group has erected similar billboard messages in other Bible Belt cities including Memphis and Nashville, and also in St. Louis. The billboards are expected to remain in place until the end of the year.
“Even children know churches spew absurdity, which is why they don’t want to attend services. Enjoy the time with your family and friends instead,” said American Atheists President David Silverman.
