KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The girl found locked in a furnace closet in Kansas City, Mo., in early July will celebrate her 11th birthday on Wednesday, Aug. 1.
In the days following her discovery, a birthday and on-going care fund was established through the Kansas City Local Investment Commission, or LINC. As of Saturday, July 29, over $3,800 was given from donors from as far away as Texas, South Carolina, Iowa, Florida, Virginia, Georgia, Washington, D.C., and even Quebec, Canada. In addition to money, donors have sent school supplies, stuffed animals, children’s books and other gifts. Over 400 cards have also been received, many wishing the young girl a happy birthday.
When she was found in early July, she weighed only 32 pounds. Her mother, Jacole Prince, 29, has pleaded not guilty to assault, child abuse and child endangerment charges. When interviewed by police the girl said she did not want to return home.
