NEVADA, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Conservation confirmed a black bear has been seen wandering near Nevada, Mo., which is about 90 miles south of Kansas City.
Conservation agent Justin Fogle confirmed the sighting last week in Vernon County near the border with Kansas.
Most of Missouri’s black bears, which number only about 150 to 300, are found farther south than Nevada, usually in the Ozarks.
While black bears are native to Missouri, most were destroyed or moved out in the 1800s.
It’s now illegal to kill a black bear in Missouri except to protect oneself or one’s property.
