TORONTO — Down three runs early, the Toronto Blue Jays responded with a huge rally inning to beat the Kansas City Royals 6-3 on Tuesday night at Rogers Centre in Toronto.
The Royals (36-43, 22-20 away) went 1-9 with runners in scoring position.
Center fielder Jason Bourgeois gave Kansas City a 2-0 lead in the third inning with a two-run RBI triple. The Royals led 3-0 heading into the fourth, but the Blue Jays had their sights set on a monster rally that would prove too much for KC to overcome.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Toronto (41-40, 22-18 home) scored five runs, completing a six-run inning to take a 6-3 lead. Designated hitter Adam Lind crushed the go-ahead three-run home run off Royals starter Vin Mazzaro.
In 5 1/3 innings, Mazzaro (3-3, 5.70 ERA) gave up six runs on 13 hits, striking out three and walking none. After the game, it was announced that Mazzaro would be sent down to AAA Omaha.
Brett Cecil (2-1, 5.64 ERA) got the win, giving up three runs on five hits in 6 innings, fanning three and walking one.
Despite hitting two leadoff doubles to start the seventh and eighth innings, the Royals couldn’t get any runners around to score.
Closer Casey Janssen (2.56 ERA) retired the side to record his 10th save.
Royals starter Luis Mendoza (3-4, 4.50 ERA) takes the hill against Blue Jays starter Carlos Villanueva (2-0, 3.52 ERA) for game three on Wednesday night at Rogers Centre.
