KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A portion of a Brookside neighborhood was evacuated due to a gas leak Wednesday around 9 p.m. Missouri Gas and Energy said Thursday that a third party contractor for AT&T hit the line, causing the break in a six-inch gas line in the area of 6400 block of Pennsylvania Ave.

Residents were put on buses while fire crews went door-to-door to turn off gas where they could.

Twenty-six homes were found to have gas levels inside. Homeowners in a three-block radius were evacuated. About two hours later they were allowed to return home after gas levels returned to zero.

Missouri Gas Energy, the Kansas City Fire Department and Kansas City Power & Light were all on scene.
