KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Prosecutors have filed charges against the brother of Kansas City, Missouri, Mayor Sly James in connection to a shooting incident earlier this month.

LaVance A. James, 54, faces charges of Domestic Assault 1st Degree, Domestic Assault 2nd Degree and Armed Criminal Action in connection to the April 14th incident.

According to prosecutors, officers were dispatched to a barbershop near 45th and Prospect, where a man with a cut on the bridge of his nose said he had been in an argument with his cousin, La Vance A. James, while sitting in his vehicle in a parking lot. According to the alleged victim, James stood outside his passenger door and produced a handgun from behind his back, then hit him in the face with it.

James then fired two shots between his legs and into the driver’s side floor board before leaving the scene, prosecutors allege.

Police: Mayor’s Relatives Involved in Shooting Case

Earlier this month, a spokesperson for Mayor Sly James – who was at a mayor’s conference in New York City at the time of the shooting, told reporters that the mayor has been estranged from that part of his family for some time.

LaVance James was arrested on Thursday and transported to police headquarters. Prosecutors have requested a $75,000 bond.
