BEAUMONT, Texas — A pair of Texas siblings who confessed to shooting a dolphin to death with a compound bow in the Gulf of Mexico were sentenced to probation in federal court this week.
According to KBTV, Cory Mosely, 23, and Cade Mosely, 18, were each given one-year probation, 50 hours of community service and a shared $7,300 fine in connection to the July, 2014, incident. In addition, neither Mosely can hunt or fish during their probation.
The brothers could have faced a maximum of a year in federal prison and a $20,000 fine for violating the Marine Mammal Protection Act. According to court documents, the pair spotted two stranded juvenile bottlenose dolphins near Cow Bayou, Texas, last July.
According to prosecutors, Cade Mosely then began shooting at the dolphins with a compound bow, mortally wounding one of the sea mammals.
Local fishermen notified state wildlife officials about the dead dolphin, and an investigatin led to the Mosely brothers.
The second stranded dolphin was rescued by wildlife agents and Seaworld, KFDM-TV reports.
The killing outraged local residents, who told KBMT-TV that the dolphins never bothered anyone in the bayou.
“I think it is awful,” said local resident Tony Fuselier. “Just terrible for anyone to hurt dolphins. Especially dolphins.”
