KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It seems like the luck of a local couple robbed at gunpoint in a Lenexa neighborhood last weekend is turning around.
Employees at the Walmart Neighborhood Market on Antioch Road are just a few people from across the metro hoping to brighten the holiday season for the Petersons.
“They found my wallet around 103rd and Quivira, everything wasn’t there,” said Jennifer Peterson, who was robbed at gunpoint when trying to buy a car off of Craigslist last weekend with her husband, Craig.
Her purse was found on Ward Parkway.
“IDs, social security cards and stuff, they’re all gone,” Peterson said.
After the original report aired, multiple people reached out to FOX 4 to help the Petersons, who say they are struggling financially, including a woman who works for a Walmart Neighborhood Market.
“I just did a quick fundraiser with my associates, I called anyone I could get a hold of to see if they would like to donate, and after I told them what the story was about, they said they would,” said Deanna Claussen, an accounting associate at Walmart Neighborhood Market Store 2442.
She said she called her manager after seeing the story and asked if they could raise money to give the Petersons gift cards.
“She has children, and children should not have to go without Christmas,” Claussen added, “It’s unfortunate what happened to her, but her children need to know that people in the community care about their family.”
“There’s actually people out there who do care, people write a lot of negative publicity, trying to start a scam, it’s nice to actually have people who do care,” said Peterson.
She said what started out as a nightmare thankfully has a happy ending. She ended up receiving almost $900 in gift cards, which she says will save Christmas this year.
“I don’t have any words but thanks. I don’t know what to say but thank you,” she said with tears in her eyes.
