KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Cerner Corporation announced its intentions on Thursday to purchase approximately 237 acres of land that was the old Bannister Mall. The company said in a press release that it’s expecting to grow and will have the land purchased pending due diligence activities.

“Cerner’s significant growth necessitates that we plan now to accommodate our future space needs,” Marc Naughton, Cerner CFO said.

The release said that Cerner hopes to complete the purchase by the end of 2013. The new site would be an extension of the nearby Innovation campus. The expansion could make space for 12,000-15,000 additional workers.

The company said that the site would include an on-site daycare, associate clinic, fitness facilities and data centers as needed.

Mayor Sly James said that this is a good thing for a tract of land that was in poor shape.

“This is a great step forward for the former Bannister Mall site. South Kansas City has been on impressive forward trajectory in recent months but this site has been an issue,” James said.
