KANSAS CITY, Mo. — We are just three weeks away from Christmas and the stores are getting more and more packed by the minute. Among the crowd at an Independence Walmart Thursday night were a dozen Kansas City Chiefs players helping kids from the FOX 4 Love Fund do some Christmas shopping.
This is an important time of year for the Love Fund, making sure kids all across the metro have something special for Christmas. The kids shopping with the Chiefs got a double dip of special, a $125 gift card courtesy of Walmart and a Kansas City Chief as their personal shopper.
“It’s cool, little giving in the holiday season, same time educating too,” said Chiefs Linebacker Derrick Johnson.
The kids in DJ’s group, went straight for the tablets, it was the big item many of the boys wanted. Eleven-year-old Eramiss, the only girl in the group, passed on the electronics, taking DJ’s advice.
“He said don’t spend your money too fast,” Eramiss advised.
Little things like that go a long way, and Johnson knows it’s his responsibility to share.
“It’s important to the kids to see me out. I’ve been here for a while in the community and the platform I have with the Chiefs, they love to see us,” explained Johnson.
DJ isn’t just helping the young kids, he’s setting an example for the young players on his team. The ones who will follow in his footsteps, on the field and in the community.
Rookie linebacker Dee Ford had a great time and was one of the kids, but he gets what it’s all about.
“We definitely make a difference and this is one way a great way with Christmas coming up,” said Ford.
