ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — A bit more than six months after he accepted the job as Chiefs Head Coach, Andy Reid welcomed rookies and a select group of quarterbacks to the team’s training camp in St. Joseph, Mo., on Monday. The team’s full squad of players is expected to report to training camp on Thursday.

“I like it. I’ve done it a couple of times now, and I think it’s great because you’ve had six weeks off, said quarterback Alex Smith. “As far as the quarterback position goes, we can work out and we can throw on air and throw to receivers, but you can’t really simulate 7-on-7 and you can’t really simulate 11-on-11. It takes a few days of work to kind of get back into things, so when the rest of the guys get here, we can really hit the ground running.”

Reid says he likes his training camps physical, because football is a physical game.

The only rookie who didn’t show up for day one was the Chiefs first round draft pick, and the NFL’s overall top pick, offensive tackle Eric Fisher from Central Michigan.

“Eric Fisher is not here,” said Reid. “John Dorsey and Trip and Joel Segal, his agent, are working through some things. I’d expect that to progress here and we’ll see how it works out. I can’t give you a time and I’m really not going to talk to you about contracts; that’s not what we do. They are working towards it and that’s important. There is communication. I’ve been through enough of these for a number of years and the most important thing is that there is talking that takes place and they are doing that.”

The Chiefs will hold their first workout on Tuesday morning on the campus of Missouri Western University. The first practices for the Chiefs will be closed to the public.
