KANSAS CITY, Mo. — What do chiefs players do on the off-season? If you’re Dwayne Bowe you help build playgrounds! The pro bowler was tossing dirt on Saturday, for a good cause.
From making plays, to making playgrounds, Saturday morning Chiefs Wide Receiver Dwayne Bowe came to a different type of field.
“It’s part of my M.O. part of my training and I just want to make it contagious and make sure kids can play for 60 minutes and get their workout in and play at the same time,” said Bowe.
Through his foundation Bowe is teaming up with the Kansas City Missouri Parks Department to build a brand new playground at northeast 52nd and North Bennington Avenue.
“Oh my gosh, it keeps them busy and it’s also an exercise method for them also,” said Bowe.
Thanks to partnerships like this one, the parks department says it’s building 18 new playgrounds this new year.
This one replacing an old swing set more than 50 years old.
“As you can imagine a playground is pretty much like anything it starts to show its age and the materials start to deteriorate,” said Mark McHenry of the KCMO Parks Department. “Something that’s been around that long it was due for replacement.”
Students from nearby Maplewood Elementary pitched in.
“Working to build a playground for the kids,” said Bergen, a student at the school.
So did members from the community.
Bowe says the project expands his mission to help kids thrive.
“I just want to do something for the kids that’s going to bring them all together and put them somewhere where they can enjoy themselves and have fun,” said Bowe.
The playground provides a new place for kids to play on and off the field.
