BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. — A Colorado girl faces attempted murder charges after allegedly attempting to poison her mother with bleach twice after the woman took away her cell phone.

According to KDVR-TV in Denver, the unidentified 12-year-old girl was taken into juvenile custody on Friday following an ongoing investigation into the two separate incidents. Boulder County Sheriff’s deputies responded to Boulder Community Hospital after learning a loss of cell phone privileges prompted the girl to go to extremes.

“It’s pretty scary,” Boulder County Sheriff’s Commander Heidi Prentup told KDVR.

Prentup said the girl’s mother, who was not identified, noticed a bleach smell in her smoothie a couple of days earlier.

“She thought that her daughter had maybe just cleaned the glass and that there was still bleach left in it. Then she started feeling sick,” said Prentup.

The sickness passed, but the mother noticed a bleach smell again a few days later coming from a water carafe in her bedroom.

“When she smelled the bleach in the carafe she confronted her daughter and her daughter told her that she was trying to kill her for taking her iPhone,” Prentup said.

Authorities would not discuss the circumstances that led to the mother taking away her daughter’s cell phone.
