Here are some tips to be a good guest without breaking the bank.
The latest American Express Spending and Saving Tracker survey found 30 percent of adults will be attening one or more weddings this year.
Wedding guests in the survey were planning to spend an average of $539 per wedding. That’s up 50 percent from 2012.
A majority of out of pocket costs will go towards travel, attire and a gift. To cut travel costs, consider driving to the destintation rather than flying.
If you have friends or family in the area, skip the hotel and crash on a couch.
The etiqutte experts say if you are crunched for cash after travel expenses, a homemade gift is OK, if it is thoughtful.
Others, including TheKnot.com, say it’s OK to send a gift up to a year after the wedding.
If attending a wedding is going to be too much of a financial burden, you’ll still need to send a gift. Just add a card with your regrets.
