ST. PAUL, Minn. — Imagine having tens of thousands of dollars belonging to you that you never knew about.

Some people in Minnesota better not mistake that notice for junk mail.

About a thousand letters are being sent to families in one Minnesota county, letting them know there’s unclaimed cash in their names.

The amounts range anywhere from about $500 to $47,000.

This is the first time the state has made an effort to find the rightful owners to the money.

“It’s only going back in drips and drabs in the neighborhood of $30 million is what’s anticipated to go back. So less than one twenty-fifth of what’s being held by the Department of Commerce today,” said State Rep. Joe Atkins (D) Minnesota.
