KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Witnesses are starting to share their stories about Sunday’s crash on Interstate 70 in the metro area — and their accounts are alarming.
Police on Monday night said Elias Sanchez Pagan, 28, and Maria Burgos, 20, died in the accident — and some witnesses say the driver was going faster than 100 miles per hour.
That crash happened Sunday evening… But the chatter concerning the accident hasn’t ended yet. One day later, fellow motorists are still asking for answers, and why the driver of a red sports car was driving so fast.
Maxine Drew still can’t believe her eyes. She says she and her 31-year old son were driving east on I-70 after shopping at The Legends in KCK on Sunday night, when a red sports car whizzed past them on the right side. Moments later, that car lost control, spun out, and slammed into this concrete support. Police at the scene told FOX 4 that both the driver and his passenger had been pronounced dead at the scene.
“It was almost like someone took him and slammed him up against the pilar,” Drew said. “It was a loud crash, and a puff of smoke went up. It was then that I knew something was pretty fatal because it hit too hard.”
A day later, remnants of the wrecked car are still strewn about on that stretch of interstate near Turner Diagonal, and so are questions. Maxine says she’s still stunned by the speed the driver was going, which, according to witnesses, might have been over 100 on the speedometer.
“I kept thinking about how precious life is,” Drew added. “In a matter of seconds, it was gone.”
“I think about the holiday season. His family is grieving over the loss of life right now. It’s pretty somber.”
Maxine says she’s still shaken up over the crash, and that she didn’t sleep well afterwards.
“It was really unreal. At first, i saw this person driving this car, and then, seconds later, life is gone.”
Kansas Turnpike Authority served as law enforcement on the scene of the crash, but to date, they have not released an official report.
