KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A grandmother is in disbelief after her three-year-old granddaughter was accidentally shot inside a home on Kansas City’s east side on Wednesday.

Little Ta’Riyah Davis is in critical condition and remains in the hospital while police are still trying to determine exactly what happened. The shooting happened near Chestnut and East 38th Street around 12:30 p.m.

The grandmother said Davis underwent surgery and has damage to her liver and kidneys. While she tries to recover, many family members have lots of questions.

“Yeah it’s very emotional. Yeah. I’m still in shock about it too. I don’t even know the details of what happened,” grandmother Dana Ward said.

Ward, as well as investigators, are still trying to figure out how it happened. Ken Lee is a family friend who was inside the house at the time, along with the child’s mother, but says he was sleeping and didn’t even hear a gunshot go off. He only woke up when police arrived.

“I seen there was blood coming from her shirt and they said she got shot,” he said.

Officers haven’t yet determined whether the child accidentally shot herself or if maybe her five-year-old brother accidentally shot her. Either way, Lee says he didn’t even know there was a gun in the house.

“I was in shock. Like I stood there and didn’t believe it, I didn’t believe it because she wasn’t screaming or crying or none of that,” he said.

So while police work to gather more details, little Ta’Riyah is hanging in there in the hospital, surrounded by family and showered in prayers.

“I know she’s out of surgery, she’s still alive and that’s the greatest thing ever and I know we believe in the Lord, so he’s going to pull her through,” Ward said.
