Police are investigating a deadly grain elevator explosion in Atchison, Kan. It happened around 7 p.m. on Saturday at Bartlett Grain. Three people are dead, three people are missing and two were burned.
The Atchison City Manager Trey Cocking tells FOX 4 about 11 people were loading a corn truck when the hospital happened. The burn victims were taken to an area hospital. Officials are not releasing their extent of injuries. The explosion could be felt as far as three miles away.
One student at Benedictine College reported that the explosion shook the dorms, and reports from people in downtown Atchison said some windows were blown out in downtown buildings.
The Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department was sending crews to assist. Leavenworth County officials were also at the scene.
The fire is still smoldering in the elevator. No official cause of the fire has been released. Search and rescue efforts will continue on Sunday.
Stored grains can produce gases that can become explosive under certain conditions.
