KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kansas City International Airport announces all flights to Dallas, Texas Tuesday night are cancelled because of the severe weather.  That threw a big wrench in plans for hundreds of people, including a metro seaman trying to get back on his ship in California.

When Fox 4 met Nicholas Hill, he had already been at KCI for hours.

“We were supposed to depart at two and they pushed it to 3 ‘O clock and then again to five and now six, so hopefully they show up on time,” Hill said.

Hill needs to get to San Diego, California, where he’s based and where he must be on his ship by Friday.  But he has a connecting flight in Dallas, one of the hardest hit places of the storm.  All the delays has forced Hill to find ways to past time at the airport.

“Playing games on the phone, and iPad, listening to music, met a few people that are also in the military too,” he said.

Once his mom, Joyce Brazelton, found out how long her son would have to wait, she and her boyfriend came to keep him company.

“It was sad because he made the arrangements to go home on Christmas to start with, so we celebrated yesterday.  But I feel this is no kind of way for him to spend Christmas,” Brazelton said.

Soon, 6:15 p.m. finally rolled around and Hill and his family walked to the gate to get him ready to board, saying a “just-in-case” goodbye.  They’d find out, his plane would be delayed again until 10 p.m.

So after Hill waits in another line for a few minutes to figure out another plan, he finally has some luck, showing off his ticket to Dallas for a flight that leaves at 6:50 p.m.

There are goodbyes again between him and his mom.

But, more bad news would soon follow.  An announcement comes across the terminal as Hill is going through security.  All flights to Dallas from KCI are cancelled, it said.

“I don’t think anyone should have to spend most of their Christmas at an airport waiting for a plane,” Hill said.

Hill’s mom said the airline her son was flying with, put him on a different airline so he could fly out early  Wednesday morning.  She said the nice thing is her son got to come home to eat, and she gets to spend a little more time with him.
