WASHINGTON — A recent medical journal article shows us a story of a man who lived for more than 20 years with a mass inside his stomach.
According to WJW in Cleveland, the mass resembled a hard-boiled egg due to its shape and its “firm, rubbery” texture.
The New England Journal of Medicine reported the man had been presented for evaluation of a history of “urinary frequency” of more than 20 years.
Surgeons removed the mass back in 2013, but recent pictures by the journal and a video uploaded to YouTube show the dramatic resemblance to an egg. According to the journal, the mass measured about 4 inches by 3.5 inches by 3 inches and weighed nearly half a pound.
The article said the mass is known as a peritoneal loose body, which is common, but tends to be smaller. When it does grow larger, it can be “associated with bowel obstruction, urinary retention, or (as in this patient) urinary frequency,” the journal said.
According to the journal, his urinary issues resolved after the mass was removed.
