KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Police need your help finding a carjacking suspect following a crime where a victim had their car taken from a Westport convenience store and when the car was recovered, police found the victim’s dog dead inside.
A media release says the carjacking happened on June 22 at about 2:45 a.m. in the 3800 block of Broadway in Kansas City’s Midtown/Westport area. The suspect is described a tall black male with long dreadlocks who was wearing a dark shirt and pants and white sneakers; he was also armed with a handgun.
The suspect had gone into the convenience store for a brief time and was later loitering near gas pumps when he jumped into the victim’s black Nissan Altima. Police say the victim was right outside of the car when it happened, and while the suspect was in the driver’s seat, he pointed the handgun at a passenger in the front seat. The passenger vacated and the suspect sped away with the dog still in the backseat.
The carjacker didn’t get far, police say they responded a short time later to a four-car accident on I-35 near West Pennway where the victim’s car was found in the wreck. Investigators say the carjacker was speeding northbound on the interstate and struck other vehicles, causing the accident.
Police say the dog named “Mister” was found deceased in the backseat and they don’t know if the dog died in the accident, but they did recover a shell casing and spent bullet in the Altima.
