KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs formally introduced John Dorsey as the team’s new general manager Monday, replacing recently fired Scott Pioli.
In the press conference, which lasted about 35 minutes, Dorsey called the position “his dream job.”
Dorsey, a former NFL linebacker who had been the head of player personnel for the Green Bay Packers, had previously worked with new Chiefs head coach Andy Reid when Reid was a member of the Packers coaching staff in the 1990’s.
Clark Hunt, the team’s CEO, labeled Dorsey as a “dynamic leader” who is “well respected by his peers.”
“It’s an honor to be a member of one of the finest franchises in all of sports,” Dorsey said. He also called the Chiefs one of “the crown jewels of the National Football League.”
The team interviewed Dorsey last Monday, sources said. Fans tell FOX 4 that they aren’t necessarily familiar with Dorsey’s resume, but they are still excited by the change.
“The way that I look at it is the Chiefs are kind of in a spot where they have to do something, so it’s definitely not going to hurt,” said fan Cody Foreman. “They can’t have much worse of a season then they just had.”
Dorsey directly responded to his doubters by saying “we are here to win,” adding “I’m going to do everything in my God-given ability to be as competitive of a team as anyone else in the NFL.”
The Kansas City Chiefs, picked by many to be a playoff contender, finished tied for the worst record in the NFL last season at 2-14. The poor performance cost the jobs of Pioli and head coach Romeo Crennel.
Dorsey knew a tough road lie ahead, “This is not a sprint, it’s a marathon.”
Reid was hired last week after being fired by the Philadelphia Eagles, where he coached for 14 seasons and led the team to multiple playoff appearances and one Super Bowl.
“Collectively we are doing this,” Dorsey said. “This is not just my opinion.”
Dorsey is the sixth general manager in Chiefs history.
“At the end of the day, you want your quarterbacks to win games.”
