KANSAS CITY, Mo. – There are more than 2,000 flights canceled in the United States on Friday, according to travel website www.flightaware.com.

Hundreds of the canceled flights were scheduled to leave from or fly into airports on the east coast. Because of the massive storm making its way to the east, airlines aren’t taking any chances, and  even people in Kansas City will be affected.

Sara Meurer’s been anxiously awaiting her Grandma’s arrival.

“She’s actually coming to watch me dance tonight because I’m on my school’s dance team, and I don’t know if we’re going to make it now because we got here, and we found out that her flight’s even more delayed than we thought,” Meurer said.

Heather Meluch knows the feeling as she waits for her 14 year-old daughter to come off her delayed Chicago flight.

“I was worried about my 14 year-old daughter being on by herself, having a layover in Chicago,” Meluch explained.

The word is, she’s coming soon.

“I am very relieved,” Meluch smiled.

A day before the big storm is poised to strike the East Coast, Chicago had weather stormy enough to delay and cancel numerous flights.

Don Ellison knows he made it just in time.

“Our flight originally got cancelled, and then we had to book a different flight to get in here, and that was delayed about two hours,” Ellison said.

While meteorologists predict the Northeast won’t get pounded with the worst of the winter storm until sometime on Friday, there are at least six flights cancelled out of K.C.I., according flightaware.com.

So those planning to travel in the coming days may not be as lucky as Sara’s grandmother, who eventually made it to her family’s embrace.

Some airlines are allowing customers affected by the storm to change flights.
