KANSAS CITY, Mo. – As an elderly man sat outside of an area store waiting for his wife, his evening took a detour. A suspected thief took advantage of the man, who has dementia, and said that the man’s wife wanted him to take the suspect shopping.
According to the Kansas City, Mo. Police Department, the couple had gone to a Dollar General located in the 5000 block of East Linwood around 5 p.m. on Tuesday. While his wife was inside shopping, the elderly man in his 90’s was sitting inside of his white, Chevrolet Impala.
The suspect, who was described as a black male in his 20’s, entered the vehicle and had the elderly man drive him to at least one store. The suspect reportedly used the man’s debit card to make at least $200 in purchases.
“We had a helicopter up, officers out looking for him. At first we thought this was maybe a carjacking, he was maybe taken against his will,” Captain Derek McCollum with KCPD said. “Some officers found him at 31st and Elmwood driving down the street and pulled him over and made the arrest.”
Police said shortly after 6 p.m. the couple’s vehicle was pulled over at 31st and Elmwood, and the suspect who was sitting in the passenger seat was apprehended. The suspect was booked into jail on Tuesday night and faces a city charge of fraud. The suspect has not been identified yet.
