KANSAS CITY,  Mo. — A possible electrical fire at a grain elevator at 4801 N.E. Birmingham brought a quick response Friday morning due to the potential for an explosion.

An employee inside what is called the “head house” was at the top when he heard what sounded like a big pop and saw smoke coming from the electrical room. The employee helped evacuate the building and called for help.

Firefighters walked through the building, but didn’t see any smoke and left. Power to the building was turned off and the elevator was shut down for the rest of the day. Crews are going to examine the electrical room for any problems. The grain elevator will reopen on Tuesday following the Labor Day weekend.
