KANSAS CITY, Mo–

1. 12 YEARS A SLAVE (R)
Fox Searchlight

RUSS
Adapted from the autobiographical book of the same name, “12 Years a Slave” is a powerful drama that serves as both an indictment of human cruelty and as a portrait of individual resilience and dignity.

SHAWN
Haunting, beautiful and intense. But
also extremely important. “12 Years a Slave”
is easily the best film ever about slavery and
the best movie of 2013. It’s a true masterpiece. A unique combination of artistic genius and efficient storytelling that brilliantly provides a harrowing glimpse of America’s ugliest chapter in history.

RUSS
Chiwetel Ejiofor plays a free black man who was kidnapped into slavery in 1841. Director Steve McQueen has fashioned an important and potent historical epic that is the best film of 2013.

SHAWN
The acting is stellar, directing off the charts and execution flawless. And will win Best Picture tomorrow at the Academy Awards. Actually “12 Years a Slave” is the most moving and powerful film I’ve ever seen. But sadly the extras don’t measure up.

2. OLDBOY (R)
FilmDistrict

RUSS
Spike Lee’s remake of the award-winning and ultra-violent South Korean revenge flick “Oldboy” is a disappointment.

SHAWN
Huge disappointment. Spike Lee ain’t got game no more.

RUSS
Josh Brolin plays a man kidnapped and held hostage alone in a motel room for 20 years. Once released, tries to solve the mystery of his baffling incarceration and attempts to get even. Sadistic and repelling, “Oldboy” commands your attention…like an ugly car wreck.

SHAWN
Funny you should mention car wreck and “Oldboy” in the same sentence. The entire movie is a collision.

An epic masterwork. Beautifully shot. Fantastic action and compelling story. High art on every level. Any fan of martial arts movies or Kung Fu movies will enjoy watching “The Grandmaster” which features exceptional bonus material.
