(CNN) It’s been rumored that Taylor Swift’s song “Dear John” is about John Mayer, and the 34-year-old singer/songwriter told Rolling Stone in a new interview that he’s “really humiliated” by the tune.
In “Dear John,” which appears on Swift’s 2010 album, “Speak Now,” the 22-year-old country star sings, “Dear John, I see it all, now it was wrong / Don’t you think 19 is too young to be played by your dark twisted games, when I loved you so?”
Mayer calls Swift’s decision to release the tune around the same time he was already taking a beating in the media for controversial comments he made about his own famous exes “lousy.”
“It made me feel terrible,” Mayer told Rolling Stone in a new issue that hits newsstands Friday. “Because I didn’t deserve it. I’m pretty good at taking accountability now, and I never did anything to deserve that. It was a really lousy thing for her to do.”
The multiple Grammy winner says he wasn’t even aware of how Swift felt about their supposed romance until he heard about the song.
“I never got an e-mail. I never got a phone call,” he went on. “I was really caught off-guard, and it really humiliated me at a time when I’d already been dressed down. I mean, how would you feel if, at the lowest you’ve ever been, someone kicked you even lower?”
But Mayer did refuse to comment on the lyric, “Don’t you think I was too young to be messed with?”
“I don’t want to go into that,” he told the magazine.
Lyrics aside, her song wasn’t even a good one, he said.
“I will say as a songwriter that I think it’s kind of cheap songwriting. I know she’s the biggest thing in the world, and I’m not trying to sink anybody’s ship, but I think it’s abusing your talent to rub your hands together and go, ‘Wait till he gets a load of this!’ That’s bulls***.”
According to the New York Post, the pair bumped into each other on June 5 at West Hollywood’s Tower Bar. Taylor reportedly insisted she be moved to another area of the restaurant.
