KANSAS CITY, MO —
1. THE HEAT
R
Fox
RUSS
In terms of likability, Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy hit it out of the park. Their efforts make the extremely foul-mouthed buddy cop comedy “The Heat” seem relatively benign.
SHAWN
“The Heat” is surprisingly raunchy and not that funny.
RUSS
McCarthy probably deserves screenwriting credit for her improvised dialogue that includes what may be a record number of f-bombs. The last time that director Paul Feig teamed up with McCarthy, the result was a huge box office hit, “Bridesmaids.” While “The Heat” doesn’t stand a chance of repeating that movie’s success, it’s a modestly entertaining female buddy comedy. It ain’t a “bromance,” it’s a “womance.” It’s the cool ladies who elevate “The Heat.”
SHAWN
The chemistry between Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy saves the day. I would love to see what they could do if they had better material. The extras are great especially the multitude of provided scenes that had to be cut and the audio commentary is priceless.

2. PACIFIC RIM
PG-13
Warmer Bros.
RUSS
Do you love “Godzilla” movies? How about “Transfomers?” If so, then “Pacific Rim” is the machine…I mean movie…for you.
SHAWN
The combo works and the movie provides silly fun. But it really does have a little boy vibe that may or may not be palatable for general audiences.
RUSS
Admittedly, Guillermo del Toro’s $200 million monster flick looks great. But the gears all show in this sometimes-clunky vehicle cobbled together from parts of a lot of other sci-fi movies. Plus, at 132 minutes, even the breathtaking eye candy gets a bit wearisome.
SHAWN
Yes, it’s too long but it’s always visually intoxicating. Sort of…
RUSS
For the 7-year-old in all of us, there’s much to like in this goofy throwback that ranks a notch above the Michael Bay spectacles it sometimes emulates. Put your brain on autopilot, channel your inner fanboy nerd, and enjoy “Pacific Rim’s” bumpy ride.
SHAWN
A notch above Michael Bay? Stop the madness. The Transformers it ain’t. Although it is very ambitious. With faults but fun. The extras are disappointing. Mostly geared toward fan boys and fairly basic. The directors’ notebook?
