1. HER (R)
Warner Brothers
RUSS
Joaquin Phoenix plays a man who falls in love with his computer’s operating system, voiced by Scarlett Johansson, in Spike Jonze’s sci-fi romance, “Her.” This brilliantly original and smart sci-fi concept almost works, creating a realistic near-future scenario. But Phoenix’s annoyingly mushy lead character is a big drawback.
SHAWN
Not gonna lie. “Her” is a really weird movie. Can’t escape that. Weird is weird. However, the more times you watch the more “Her” oddly gets better. Not saying it’s a classic or something. But the themes the film explores about life, love and companionship are brilliantly dissected and creatively examined. And yes, the screenplay is far better than any of the performances or direction. Just an example of really smart writing which is why Spike Jonze won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. The extras are weak but I am definitely upgrading my review of “Her.” Give it a chance. It’s a challenging watch to say the least.

2) THAT AWKWARD MOMENT (R)
Focus Features
RUSS
That awkward moment truly occurs when you realize that you’ve plunked down your hard-earned money for a sophomoric romantic comedy that equates raunchy with funny. Good actors like Zac Efron, Miles Teller and Michael B. Jordan are caught with their pants down…literally.
SHAWN
This is what you call a generational divide. “That Awkward Moment” perfectly captures the ‘bro’ perspective of the millennial male and his challenges when it comes to life, love and relationships.
RUSS
Imagine a TV sitcom where the cliche-ridden dialogue is replaced with R-rated sex talk, and you’ll have a pretty good idea of what you’re in for. The good cast is thwarted by a script that’s baby pool shallow.
SHAWN
The cast is dope. Especially Michael B Jordan. Fun, entertaining and a good time if you don’t take it too seriously. And that girl! Love Imogen Potts. She’s gonna be a star. Trust me. The extras include an extended gag reel, a sit down with the stars, character profiles and the typical behind the scenes stuff.
