KANSAS CITY, Mo —
The Kansas City Film Critics’ Circle, the second oldest critics group in the country, named “The Master” the best film of 2012 during its 46th annual awards meeting on December 16th.
“The Master” is a fictional story that takes place just after World War II. It tells the tale of an alcoholic sailor suffering from post traumatic stress syndrome (Joaquin Phoenix) who joins a religious cult run by a charismatic writer (Philip Seymour Hoffman).
Hoffman received the Best Supporting Actor award for his performance and writer/director Paul Thomas Anderson’s script was recognized as Best Original Screenplay.
Other major winners included Daniel Day Lewis who scored as Best Actor for his performance as the Great Emancipator in “Lincoln.” He won by a single vote over Phoenix among the 31 active members of the KCFCC.
Jennifer Lawrence won the Best Actress prize for her performance in the offbeat romantic comedy, “Silver Linings Playbook.” Lawrence plays an emotionally challenged young woman who begins an unusual romance with a man suffering from bi-polar issues (Bradley Cooper).
Ang Lee received the “Robert Altman Award for Achievement in Directing” for his work on the adventure fantasy, “Life of Pi.” The award is named in honor of the famed filmmaker who hails from Kansas City.
The Kansas City Film Critics’ Circle is a professional association made up of 31 film critics from newspapers, broadcast and internet outlets in the KC area. The awards are called the Loutzenheiser Awards in memory of KCFCC’s founder, the late Dr. James Loutzenheiser.
