OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Contrary to a rogue email, Blue Valley North High School did not suffer extensive water damage and classes were not cancelled on Monday.
Early Monday morning, a Kansas City tweet said that a Blue Valley North email was sent, saying Monday classes were cancelled due to water damage. A quick early-morning phone call to Kristi McNerlin, Blue Valley School District spokesperson, cleared up the rumor. However it’s still unclear who sent the email.
“They actual email did not come from our system,” said McNerlin. “So it wasn’t a case where they hacked into our school district system. It’s happened through an alternative source that we’re still trying to identify”
Despite the fake email, attendance was not affected on Monday.
Below is a copy of the email.
Dear Blue Valley North community,
Unfortunately due to heavy rains and severe weather, the school has suffered a substantial amount of water damage. As a precautionary measure for the safety of our students, Blue Valley North will not have classes on Monday May 7th. The closing also allows for the district maintenance staff to properly clear the standing water throughout the school.
Students who are taking AP Exams tomorrow will still be provided transportation throughout the day. Please show up at the school at the pre-determined times for your respective examinations.
The district has assessed that the school will be operational by Tuesday. The safety of all students is our number one concern, so we ask that all families stay alert and continue to monitor the weather.
Go Mustangs!
Dr. Tonya Merrigan
Blue Valley North Principal
It is always a great day to be a Blue Valley North Mustang!
