KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Family and friends of a 10-year-old little girl who was shot and killed inside her home held a parade in her honor Sunday. The group marched in the neighborhood Machole Stewart lived in.

“Machole lived in this community, she danced in this community, she rode her bike on this street,” said Kimberly Blackman, Stewart’s grandmother. “It’s really sad that my granddaughter is being buried and not marching with her team.”

On Sunday, the step team Stewart was a part of performed in her honor. One of the step members, Jamea Dotson, said it was sad not having Stewart by her side.

“Without her it’s kind of different,” she said. “Knowing she’s not out there cheering for us or dancing with us, it’s just different, it’s hard.”

Police said someone drove by Stewart’s house in the 1400 block of New Jersey and opened fire. Bullets went into the living room, fatally striking her. She died at the scene. Stewart’s killer is still at large.

“You know when you shot in my home that there was children in this home and including me, why did you do this?” Blackman said. “You need to give it up and turn yourself in.”

The group said they plan to march again next Sunday.
