KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Hundreds of people gathered Saturday to remember one of Kansas City’s most well-known broadcaster.
People assembled on the Country Club Plaza to celebrate the life of Walt Bodine.
Bodine passed away last Sunday at the age of 92.
For 70 years, Bodine made a name for himself in Kansas City. He was even the news director at WDFA-TV.
“He was interested in everybody and everything no matter what you did in life, he wanted to know about it,” said Bodine’s son Marty.
On Saturday, hundreds gathered for what was called a celebration of life. All in honor of Bodine and his contributions to the metro.
“He cared about people and he cared about this city and loved it and everybody in it,” Andrea said.
For almost 30 years, Bodine hosted ‘The Walt Bodine Show,” a popular call-in radio program on KCUR-FM.
“I first met Walt at UMKC and he was a professor,” said Andrea Young.
Bodine’s family, friends co-workers, and even fans honored Bodine’s life.
Young had the pleasure to wrok next to Bodine for years.
“You never got tired of him telling a story,” she said. “He was a beautiful person.”
But while most of his life seemed very public, there was another side to Bodine.
“He was a really fun father to have,” said Bodine’s son Tom. “We were in the power and light building where WHB radio was located and he took us out on a fire escape and made paper airplanes and sailed them out into the city. On a Sunday night,that was better than playing catch.”
On March 24, Bodine passed away, but the memories and his contributions live on.
“They broke the mold when he was made,” said Bodine’s son Marty.
Bodine donated his body to medical science, so there will be no funeral.
