KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Firefighters and police believe someone set fire to an apartment building in Kansas City, Kan. early Friday morning and are investigating it as a crime.

The blaze started at about 1:40 a.m. at an apartment complex near 18th and Washington. According to a resident, someone threw a cocktail bomb inside the building.

A ten-year old was the first to notice the fire. He was watching cartoons on television when  he noticed the smoke and alerted his family.

The fire spread quickly and residents were trapped and had to find ways out.

One family couldn’t get out of their door because of the flames, so they jumped out of a first-floor window.

In all, seven people are homeless.
