KANSAS CITY, Mo. – One fun-loving family of four has been planning to relocate to a new home, and decided to ‘break the ice’ with the surrounding community in a rather unique way.

The Kalahurka family, which consists of Bill, Stephanie, and their two children, Amelia and Billy, have been building a new home on a corner lot next to the intersection of 63rd St. and Oak St. in Kansas City, Mo. They purchased the land back in 2011, because according to Bill, he had always planned to “drag” his wife back to Kansas City from Texas.

As a way to let those in the surrounding area know who was planning on moving in, Bill said his wife used a bit of creativity and humor and came up with the idea to make a clever and colorful sign which the family placed in front of their construction site.

The top of sign reads ‘Coming Soon to Your Neighborhood’ and features a family portrait of the charismatic bunch adorned in matching red track suits, similar to those in the movie “The Royal Tenenbaums.” Underneath the picture reads ‘The Kalahurka Family.’

“We think the coming soon sign is absolutely adorable,” said Martha Thompson, who works at a store called J’adore located directly across the street from the Kalahurka’s construction site.

Thompson said she had never seen anything like the sign before, which can be seen from the store, and said many people have stopped to take pictures of the amusing sign.

“Lots of people have come into our store to ask us about it, so it’s obviously attracting a lot of people,” said Thompson. “It’s kind of nice to know who’s going to be living there.”

The Kalahurka family regularly wears track suits on the weekends, which helps people make the connection as to who they are, when the family is seen out somewhere.

“When we’re just walking around we’ll see some people out and they immediately recognize us,” said Bill.

Bill, who stops by the site once a day to check on the home’s progress, said he hopes his family can move in by Memorial Day.

“We’re definitely looking forward to having our own place and being permanently settled,” he said.

As for the sign, Bill said he originally hoped it would make for a good icebreaker with new neighbors, but didn’t quite expect the reaction it got from the local community.

“I didn’t know it was going to cause that much of a buzz, but I’m excited about it,” said Bill.

In addition to the sign, the family also maintains an online blog featuring their two children, called The Kalahurka Kiddos Amelia and Billy, where they post stories, information, pictures and videos pertaining to their two children. The most recent was an edited video documenting Amelia and Billy’s 2014 New Year’s resolutions.
