KANSAS CITY, Mo – A woman got a frantic call from a family member, telling her that her big brother was shot and killed.

The shooting happened around 2:00 a.m. in the 8000 block of Crystal in Kansas City, Missouri. Police say there was some sort of disturbance that led to a person being killed and another injured.

Police say they do have a person of interest detained for questioning but no official charges have been filed.

While police are still trying to piece together exactly what happened, family members of the victim have a lot of questions of their own.

“He called me around 12:00 that day, was just making jokes like ‘what you doing? I’m bored,’” Jasmine Johnson-Troy said.

It’s the last conversation Johnson-Troy had with her big brother.

Hours later she got the call that changed her life forever.

“Unreal. It’s like I just felt stiff,” she said.

She felt paralyzed as family told her that her 23-year-old brother was shot inside his apartment complex.

“I (sic) seen him under the sheet, just sitting here,” said Johnson-Troy.

Around his body was shattered glass from windows which were shot at.

“It was like, so silent in the crowd. He was just lying there. I felt out of body. It just wasn’t real,” she recalled.

Family says the victim lead a positive life and was involved in an after school program to help keep kids off the street. They say they have no idea who would want to harm him and can’t believe the same parking lot they now stand in is where he took his last breath.

“That was my brother, but it was also my best friend. I love him, I’ll be missing him every day,” Johnson-Troy said.

Another person was injured in the shooting but is said to have non-life threatening injuries.
