KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Come to tailgate, come to cheer, come to play! Just don’t come to play in the fabled Kauffman Stadium fountains.
A 25-year-old woman from Iowa learned that lesson the hard way Monday night. Jessica McCoy faces several municipal charges, but it could be social media that delivers the harshest punishment.
Dubbed “fountain mom” and “fountain girl” on Twitter and Facebook, McCoy’s trist through the water has been shared thousands of times. Some fans find it funny, others not so much.
“She took the spotlight away from what’s happening on the field and for someone to do that, it’s uncalled for.” said Brandi Wisdom, a longtime Royals fan.
She wasn’t alone. Major Floyd Mitchell is in charge of the Kansas City, Mo. police officers who work off-duty at Kauffman Stadium. His officers have to deal with all sorts of characters and behavior, but this went too far for him as a police officer and as a fan.
“I’m a huge baseball fan. These guys are out there playing hard trying to get at least a wild card spot and that just takes away from the game,” Major Mitchell said.
Wisdom was seething up until game time. She would have liked to have seen McCoy banned from the stadium but knows it’s not practical. Instead she’s finding some satisfaction in how social media will serve as a constant reminder.
“How embarrassing. Social media is everywhere. This is going to stay with her for the rest of her life.” declared Wisdom.

The Royals security personnel and the KCPD officers remind everyone to obey the signs and stay off the field and out of the fountains. There are no plans to add extra security for the remaining home games, but the zero tolerance policy remains in effect. Break the law, go to jail, no exceptions.
