INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — Independence, Mo., police are trying to find out how a fetus ended up at a sewage pumping facility Saturday morning.
Detectives said an employee going about his rounds discovered the baby between 8:30 and 9 a.m. at the pumping station on Dickinson Road near Highway 24. Investigators said the fetus was found next to a drainage outlet where pipes come out of the ground.
FOX 4 News was told the area where the fetus was found receives sewer waste from thousands of locations.
Police said it’s not clear whether the baby was flushed down a toilet or dumped at the facility.
According to the medical examiner, the baby was between 8 to 10 inches in length with fully developed hands and feet. This fact, investigators said, leaves the examiner to believe the child’s mother could have been in her second trimester of pregnancy.
Police said they spoke to several people who live on Dickinson Road to see if anyone saw anything suspicious at the sewage facility between Friday and Saturday morning. But so far, detectives said they have little information to go on.
