COLUMBIA, Mo. – A veteran fire lieutenant was killed in the line-of duty early Saturday morning.

Columbia Fire Department Lieutenant Bruce Britt, who is a 23 year veteran, was killed as he assisted on the scene of a structural collapse. The collapse occurred at the University Village Apartments, located at 601 Providence Road South in Columbia.

Lieutenant Britt suffered fatal injuries during the incident and was pronounced dead at University Hospital.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time and the members of our department,” the Columbia Fire Department said in a statement.

More details are pending release, following a press conference on Saturday afternoon.
