LAWRENCE, Kan. — Firefighters battled a grass fire in Lawrence, Kan., on Thursday, as the flames were fueled by the hot, bone-dry conditions.
The fire broke out around 10:30 a.m. on the west side of Lawrence near Langston Hughes Elementary School, forcing the evacuation of several homes.
Firefighters were able to stop the flames before any structures could catch fire. There were no reports of injuries in the blaze.
Residents in the area told FOX 4 that they didn’t think much of the fire at first.
“It seemed so distant, you see a fire out in the middle of what seems like woods, you don’t get too worried,” said Steve Spooner. “Before you knew it, the fire just got closer and closer. It was really strange experience.”
According to authorities, the fire was caused when a wild animal of some sort came into contact with overhead powerlines.
