KANSAS CITY, Kan. — Firefighters were called out Friday morning to put out a blaze at the Regency Inn near I-635 and State Ave.
They received the first and second alarm at 8:10 a.m., calling both alarms from the beginning because the large structure they would potentially have to cover.
Kansas City, Kan. Fire spokesperson Craig Duke said it is a 57-room hotel. He says there have been no injuries, but heavy smoke could be seen coming from the upper floor when crews arrived.
“Our guys got up on the roof to open up the roof it looks like the fire started in the laundry room area,” Duke said. “At this time we’re working on this to confirm that. We have investigators on the scene.”
“We saw big gulps of smoke, we saw big black smoke just everywhere…and that’s all we saw and we was getting people out of their rooms and everything, keeping all the doors closed to keep the fire confined because we didn’t know if the fire was spreading through the rooms,” said Brenda Washington, an employee of the motel.
“The flames was inside the attic and it started smoking and smoking and came out from there,” said the owner, Paul Deasi.
The fire was brought under control at about 8:35 a.m.
