RANDLEMAN, N.C – The woman known as the ‘First Lady of NASCAR,’ Richard Petty’s wife, Lynda Gayle Owens Petty, has died.

According to FOX 4’s sister station WGHP in North Carolina, Lynda died at her Level Cross home on Tuesday at the age of 72. She had been fighting a long battle with cancer, and was reportedly surrounded by family when she passed away. Her family released a statement saying she did so “peacefully.”

“We wish to sincerely thank everyone who has supported us and our family throughout the years and at this time,” her family said in the statement.  “We will forever love and miss a wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.”

A private memorial service will be held for Lynda’s friends and family in Randleman, North Carolina. Donations can be made to The Petty Family Foundation at 311 Branson Mill Road, Randleman, N.C. 27317.
