SHAWNEE, Kan. — The legal process began Monday for the one of the four men charged in Friday’s Shawnee shootout at a gun store.

Hakeem Malik, who is the first of four men charged with killing a Shawnee gun shop owner, faced a Johnson County judge on Monday, charged with felony first degree murder.

Also Monday, a second suspect, Nicquan Midgyett, was moved from the hospital to jail and is scheduled to appear before a judge next week.

Meanwhile, boards have replaced shot up windows at the Shawnee gun shop, “She’s a Pistol,” after the shootout on Friday.

Malik is one of four people police say tried to rob the business. That robbery went horribly wrong, leaving the owner, 44-year-old John Bieker dead. Four young men, just 18 and 19 years old, all charged with felony first degree murder. They are:

  • Hakeem Willie Malik, 18
  • Londro Emanuel Patterson, 19
  • Deanthony Armond Wiley, 19
  • Nicquan Ke-Aaron Midgyett, 19

Jim Lund says he is a customer and more importantly a friend of John Bieker and Bieker’s wife, Becky, who was also there during the shootout.

“Gotta get my thoughts here; just nice people,” said Lund. “John always had a gun in his back and so did Becky.”

A big part of the couple’s business besides the gun shop and gun range, was teaching gun safety and self-defense, especially to women.

“Why are you going to go in when you know these people are armed and what they are selling you know, they know how to use weapons. The whole thing doesn’t make sense to me,” said Lund.

Police and prosecutors are not saying much about how the shootout started and who shot whom, but FOX 4 put in a request for the probable cause statement on Monday which will reveal much more.

Malik and the others are being held on $500,000 bonds. The other three suspects were shot in the incident. They will go before a judge when they are released from the hospital.
